Home-and-Family Technology is constantly advancing and in the last hundred years we have seen a massive leap in a multitude of areas. Not least is the incredible progression that has occurred in the design of the television. The original televisions started off as great big bulky models, due to having to incorporate the original technology. Since then there have been more and more manufacturers competing to produce not only the model which functions best, but which also looks the part. Technology has come on in leaps and bounds since the very first television was invented and now the necessary parts can fit into a much slimmer, flatter casing. The first televisions worked via CRTs; cathode ray tubes. The cathode, a heated filament, sits within the glass tube and the ray – i.e the electrons come from this cathode – and fill the void in the tube. There are coloured phosphor dots on the end of each individual tube and these sit against a screen. The electrons are drawn towards this screen, thus lighting up the coloured pigment causing it to glow and creating the picture. Following this design the next thing to shout about was the LCD or Liquid Crystal Display television screen. Due to the configuration of the new parts which make up this screen, it is much lighter in weight and thinner than the original models. The new design also allowed for much bigger screens to be created. The liquid crystals which the screen is made up from are sensitive to heat, therefore when an electric current applied, they move and act like shutters, blocking off certain types of light. White light is filtered out and only green, red and blue light is allowed to pass through the crystals. The type of light which is used in this design is provided by CCFLs cold cathode fluorescent lamps. An image is created on the screen which is a polarizing material and the colours merge to create a pixel. The LED screen is the latest advance, one step up from the LCD television. Light Emitting Diodes are used to light the screen. One of the main benefits of this type of technology are that LEDs use far less power, therefore making them extremely energy efficient. Not only does this help the environment but it can also help you to save money on your electricity bills. They give a sharper, crisper image due to the fact that the light is much brighter.
